WOODPECKER.SOCIAL?

Woodpecker.social is a Mastodon instance established in December of 2022. Mvskoke Nation citizens own, administer, and moderate this instance.

Woodpeckers are medicine birds, respected for their persistence and power to ‘pull things out’.

The largest and strongest of the woodpeckers is cvkvlv, the ivory-billed woodpecker. Traditional Mvskoke medicine practitioners still use songs about cvkvlv. Its own song was recorded only once, in 1935.

Cvkvlv is pronounced CHUH kuh luh, kind of like chocolate, if you need a mnemonic.

WHY?

Woodpecker.social is an ad-free, corporate-free, bigotry-free, and culture respectful environment for Indigenous people to be in community and safe spaces.

• Ultimately, we are helping to build an Indigenized social network.
• We stand with our people. We know and support their struggles.
• We moderate to Indigenous standards not colonial standards.

WHO?

Woodpecker.social is currently accepting registrations from Indigenous people through the ‘Create Account’ portal or by invitation. Non-Indigenous relatives and allies can join by invitation only.

• New accounts are usually activated from 6am-midnight CST.

HOW MUCH?

Woodpecker.social is 100% free. We will never charge fees or pressure anyone for donations. All expenses are paid for by the administrators and donations.

Woodpecker.social is a small instance.

• Woodpecker.social will never be a large general purpose instance and will be Indigenized as much as possible.
• We are federated with 99% of the Fediverse but use no relays in order to maximize content relevant to our users.

Woodpecker.social believes 100% in true Indigenous Nation sovereignty, physical LandBack, and digital LandBack. We reject calls to assimilate into the generally white culture Fediverse. The whole ghettoization theory is white supremacy garbage.

BLOCKED INSTANCES

We use the Oliphant Tier 0 blocklist, which blocks the majority of the bad actors without getting crazy aggressive. We are adamantly opposed to blocking BIPOC, marginalized, or leftist instances. If you see anything blocked or not blocked that you believe is in error, let us know.

COMMITMENT

A small instance has many advantages in performance and administrator access. We are committed to 3 months notice in the extremely unlikely event we should decide to pull the plug.

• Woodpecker.social may go offline an hour or less once a week for unscheduled cold backups. There may also be other unscheduled maintenance or upgrade events. We have over 99% uptime availability.

   • Any anti-Indigenous activity from a Woodpecker.social account at the sole determination of the Woodpecker.social administrators or moderators will be grounds for account termination.
   • Any anti-Indigenous activity from an external instance at the sole determination of the Woodpecker.social administrators or moderators will be grounds for user blocking, report filing, and/or domain blocking/de-federation.
3. We can’t stress this enough – Absolutely no racism, anti-semitism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia. 95% of our issues fall in this category.
   • Any infraction of this category from a Woodpecker.social account at the sole determination of the Woodpecker.social administrators or moderators will be grounds for account termination.
   • Any infraction of this category from an external instance at the sole determination of the Woodpecker.social administrators or moderators will be grounds for user blocking, report filing, and/or domain blocking/de-federation.
4. Advertising authentic Indigenous products and genuine Indigenous businesses is allowed and encouraged.
   • Advertising fake inspired appropriated products by non-Indigenous businesses is not allowed.
5. No personal Indigenous gatekeeping.
   • Regardless of opinions on this subject, this is a vibe we do not want coming here from Twitter.
6. Promotion of Right-Wing, Conservative, Republican, Fascist, Nazi or other equally stupid political views is not allowed.
   • If extreme idiocy is your inclination, go somewhere else.
7. Any other issues not covered by these rules will be settled by the sole determination of the Woodpecker.social administrators or moderators.
